2) Kobos are like Kindles but work with NZ libraries (Libby etc) and apparentlly you can get your substacks onto them https://www.reddit.com/r/kobo/comments/1akrfe3/substack_to_kobo/ 3) Just check you aren't borking your battery by always having your phone plugged in. 4) Reading you on a PC, and still using feedly on PC a lot as well as substack. The Gell-Mann amnesia effect! So it is a thing. Not an expert, but as a local I notice when international writers let slip they haven't spent much time in Aotearoa by their little geographical wording hiccups. My favourite authoritative UK newspaper will describe a city as being ON the North Island (it's IN, I don't know why) - but I still don't question its insightful geo-political analysis... Anyway now I have a name for it to ferret away for quiz nights - cheers!
🙋 Don't apologise for having a comparatively good life - we NEED to keep hold of the idea it is POSSIBLE eh⁉️ Because of the vast range of people & subjects you have covered in your work (& apparently your personal reading) you can genuinely have absorbed such "truths" as "you spend your whole life saying I'll do this 'one day', then suddenly you lose somebody close to you and you realise that one day might never -"... Just because YOU haven't recently been in that position, doesn't make it relevant ⁉️ And PERSONALLY I can tell you it is real & true 😥 As for your resolutions...
1) When home, I roam around the garden, the house, the garage - when I am not on my TABLET which I use for reading Substacks while at home, & YouTube interviews & news clips, live animal feeds etc. My phone is always on me for family emergencies (which have happened often enough to worry, & conditions are ripe for more as in aged relatives etc.) & yes, when someone who depends on you is being loaded into an ambulance time is of the essence
2) I 👍 this - used to be I had to read from start to finish in near-as one sitting (many late nights!) but I do have a Kindle app on my phone synced to my tablet, and the Libby library app to borrow books & magazines (also synced to my tablet) and lately have learnt to dive in & out - good mental exercise remembering what was happening up to now when a name crops up that was mentioned earlier but not prominent in the narrative ⁉️
3) 👍👏 I have worked in reception/public facing roles most of my life, so a) I know how good it is to feel real connection from "customers", but also how to initiate it - same with passing people on a walk & smiling/nodding & commenting on their cute dog or an item on the beach, or how it is chilly today, or whatever. Checkout operators of all ages perk up when you initiate even the most banal exchanges, & gives me a ❤️😁
4) Gell-Mann Amnesia effect - brilliant 👍 Personally I take some time before I TRUST a source of information (rather than opinion) & have learnt to check other sources if it is of importance, but yeah 😱 BTW Bill Bryson is right up there as a favourite non-fiction writer & LOVE all of his books - particularly audio books where his droll sense of the absurd sounds so good in his own voice 😜 & if I was going to do a quiz on the Appalachian Mountains I would cross-check my facts before locking them in, but his is a great STARTING point I would not have had otherwise...
5) Find another way to read Substack newsletters⁉️ NOT sending a photo of me perched on my bed checking my inbox 😱 Best room in the house for sun & views so... Again, mostly read on my tablet while home, but the phone is also good for breaks in long walks (using my free 1hr mobile data) or parked up in the car watching the sea on a stormy day. (BTW don't need to purchase a Kindle per se as a low-cost tablet can have a Kindle app & extras a Kindle doesn't including the Substack app - I get used to reading books etc. on a phone screen, but videos & photos & art etc. are much superior on a bigger screen, as are book pages, & I have a wireless keyboard & mouse with the tablet which is why I can ramble on writing comments 🤔😉 Also, for days I want to sit in the bush, or in the wetlands, or by the sea, and read an e-book I take my tablet in my bag for more comfortable reading)
It is a nice break from politics & politicians & other stress-inducing topics to have these articles you share - appreciate the korero 🫂
P. S. I would share a photo of a view outside, but can't seem to find the option 😂
Enjoying your substack! Love the reads. Must read that book you mentioned here about getting to know someone. Ten pages might be too many for me - I could commit to one page!. Have a good break, you are always working!! I spent too many minutes of my life writing this comment.
Yeah the Economist (which I love) describes our ruling party as The Nationals?
Fun post! 1)I think this was the 100 pages guy (it floated around on substack too): https://thelampmagazine.com/issues/issue-26/the-one-hundred-pages-strategy

Usually over breakfast; always with a coffee. The Spinoff’s Bulletin every weekday, & other wonderful Substacks around it (today you, & Leah McFall).
But I’m not sure how to add a photo here?
